GOLFERS are gearing up to compete at Queensland’s second oldest pro-am golf tournament on the Howeston Golf Course.
In its 39th year, spectators are invited to cheer on their local players at Birkdale on Monday, August 6.
The popular event has attracted almost 60 players expected to be on the green with $12,000 prize money on offer.
Howeston Golf Course owner Lynn Weston said some players who played in the pro-am in previous years had become well known golfers.
”The event is everyone’s chance to see the up and coming ones that go on to be some of the best in the game,” she said.
“A local family that have done well in the sport is the Wilkin family.
“Aaron Wilkin who happened to share the second prize money in the Maroochydore River pro-am last weekend will be playing at the event.”
Mrs Weston said she urged people to come down on the day to enjoy the live board scoring and to grab one of the club’s renowned steak burgers.
“We have a great following – there’s always cars parked along the street with supporters wanting to spend the day at the course,” she said.
“Those who are working during the day can still come down to make the long-drive competition at 4.30pm.”
The 27-hole Howeston Golf Course, which was once a dairy farm, is run by Mrs Weston, her husband Bill and other family members, including grandsons Jake, Kerron and Lachlan Weston.
