THE $5 million upgrade at Cleveland-Redland Bay and Giles roads intersection at Redland Bay has been completed.
The work was done as a condition of the development approval for the Shoreline estate, which will be home to more than 10,000 people.
The upgrades include traffic signals, street lighting, road widening, dedicated left and right turning lanes and stormwater drainage.
Motorists have pushed for work to be done on the blackspot intersection for years.
In February last year an 82-year-old man died after his car ploughed into a school bus at the intersection, prompting further calls for action to be taken to improve safety.
Redland mayor Karen Williams said she was pleased to see the safety upgrades completed at the busy intersection.
“I’ve made a number of personal pleas to the state government to improve this intersection and I congratulate Lendlease and the government for responding and getting the job done,” Cr Williams said.

Shoreline developer Lendlease Communities managing director Matt Wallace said Lendlease had worked in partnership with Redland City Council and Department of Transport and Main Roads to deliver the intersection upgrade.
“As a key part of delivering Shoreline, Lendlease will continue to invest in local road upgrades and traffic conditions,” Mr Wallace said.
“This will help ensure that local infrastructure meets the growing needs of the community now and well into the future.”
Redlands MP Kim Richards said the state government had paid $2.4 million towards the roadworks as part of the Safer Roads Sooner program.
“I’m very pleased to note these works have now been completed and look forward to further safety upgrades and traffic improvements,” she said.
Ms Richards said the works had been brought forward, after originally being planned for completion in 2020.
