THE Southern Moreton Bay Islands Coastcare has been given almost $6000 to rehabilitate Sandpiper Beach on Macleay Island.
Federal MP Andrew Laming said the grant had been awarded under the National Landcare Program.
“SMBI Coastcare is a great community volunteer group that has raised concerns at Sandpiper Beach about the degradation of mangroves and other materials which help prevent erosion,” Mr Laming said.
“The problems have resulted in an intrusion of salt water into the littoral zone, killing juncus plants and large melaleuca trees.”
Mr Laming said the organisation had a plan to secure, rehabilitate, revegetate and monitor the area.
“The work will also involve local clubs and relevant agencies. It’s an important local environmental initiative, deserving of support,” Mr Laming said.
Southern Moreton Bay Islands Coastcare was a finalist for the environmental guardians award in the Healthy Land and Water awards announced earlier this year.
The organisation works across Russell, Karragarra, Lamb and Macleay islands.
