CLEVELAND State School is celebrating their long and rich history with the community at their upcoming country fete, featuring egg and spoon races, a historical crunchy waffle double decker bus and a car show.
About 100 food and market stalls, carnival rides and pig races will also be held on Saturday, October 13 at the school on Winyard Street.
Parents and Citizens Association president Wolfgang Neszpor said there would be a world of fun to mark the school’s 150 years.
“We want to bring back an typical country school feel to the fete so we will have old school activities like wheelbarrow, egg and spoon and three-legged races,” he said.
“There will be fashion and car shows to see the changes over the years.
“We are also keen to have a crunchy waffle double decker bus that has an interesting history behind it.
“It was used as a bus in the 60s in London...before it was bought by someone from the Netherlands in 2014 and had it converted as a waffle bus.”
Mr Nezpor said he hoped the fete would bring the community together.
Principal Mark Ionn said it was important to recognise the community’s role played in shaping the school and to acknowledge the milestone.
“Having and supporting the fete held by the P and C will help recapture history and moments that have taken place – all the roll calls, friendships made and changes to the buildings – to reconnect and share stories,” he said.
In the lead up to the event, the Parents and Citizens Association is having a call for sponsors and asking past staff and students to register for a roll call on the day.
“We are looking for donations (like products, services, vouchers for raffles and a silent auction) and businesses to sponsor a pig in the races or to be a stall sponsor,” Mr Neszpor said.
He said funds raised would go towards buying equipment for the school.
