A CRAFT beer brewery tucked away in Capalaba’s Christine Place industrial precinct has won the popular vote in a competition run by travel site Expedia.
Ten breweries – five each from Melbourne and Brisbane – were pitted against each other in the site’s Kegs of Glory contest, with Bacchus Brewing Co winning the bout by more than 100 votes.
Owner Ross Kenrick said he was delighted by the outcome, with a 25-kilogram glass and marble trophy awarded to the business last Friday placed pride of place on the brewery’s bar.
The business notched up more votes than bigger competitors like Mountain Goat Beer, with some Bacchus Brewing Co staff unable to stop hugging the trophy while at work.
“It was won by our customers,” Mr Kenrick said.
“The real pleasure is that we are only a tiny brewery and to get support, especially against giant Melbourne companies, has meant a huge amount.
“When the community rallies to support you, it is a lovely feeling.”
Tourism Media’s Johnny Danalis, who produced the Kegs of Glory video series for Expedia, said 3400 votes were cast by beer lovers in the decider.
Bacchus picked up a fifth of the votes, showing local love for the Capalaba brewery was strong.
“It was full-on community support,” Mr Danalis said.

Melbourne was decided as Australia’s beer craft capital against Brisbane in the competition, with the winner of a trip to Portland, Oregon – the United State’s beer craft capital – yet to be decided.
The prize is up for grabs to voters who submitted entries explaining their thoughts on which was Australia’s craft beer capital and why.
Bacchus Brewing Co has 21 beers on tap and does a roaring trade when opened for food service.
The busiest time is on Friday evening but food is also available on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Beers on tap this week include Atomic Pina Colada and Ferrari Rocher, which boasts hazelnut and chocolate hues.
