IT was anchors away for Ron and Margaret Green when they joined the Royal Australian Navy more than six decades ago.
Ron was a dashing sailor well on his way to becoming a petty officer and Margaret, nee Isdale, a newly minted WRAN when they met in Canberra.
Margaret had come from Norman Park and Ron from Kangaroo Point where his family had lived in the same house for 75 years.
The pair fell in love and were married in Sydney on August 15, 1953, and have just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Daughter-in-law Kate Green said Ron did a tour of duty in the Korean War after which they made their home in Brisbane settling at the eastside suburb of Norman Park.
“They lived in the same home for 35 years, bringing up their three children – two sons and a daughter,” Ms Green said.
“After 12 years in the Navy, Ron joined the Commonwealth Public Service.
“Margaret was a homemaker and took up oil painting.
“Her beautiful scenes of Australia now adorn homes as far away as the Czech Republic and Denmark.”
“...Mum’s turning 86 and dad 91 and their birthdays are within four days of each other in October.”
Ms Green said her parents moved to the Redlands 30 years ago where they set up house at Alexandra Hills as part of their retirement plans.
“Since that time they have been active members of the Capalaba Sports Club playing bowls and joining in social events and trivia nights,” Ms Green said.
“Ron has also been a member of the St Anthony’s Parish Community where they received the Grandparents of the Year Award in 2007.”
They are proud grandparents to eight grandchildren and great grandparents to six great grandchildren.
Ron and Margaret have travelled overseas often but are always happy to get back home to their neighbours and the delights of living in the Redlands, eating at local restaurants and attending Redland City Band Concerts with family and friends.
They celebrated their wedding milestone at The Courthouse Restaurant with about a dozen family members.
