THE Redlands Spinners and Weavers has celebrated the group’s 40th anniversary with a lunch at Wellington Point.

Members first met in August 1978 after two spinners and weavers, Betty Tree of Thornlands and Jennie Shute of Alexandra Hills, met at a weaving display in Brisbane the previous year.

After that first conversation at St John’s Cathedral the two women got together from September 1977, meeting at Jennie’s home.

Before long they were joined by Pat Lack, Deirdre Hauguases and Judy Avery.

A photo of Mrs Tree sitting weaving alongside a sheep named Hilda appeared in the Bayside Bulletin in 1978.

The group’s first recorded meeting was on August 8, 1978.

Several of the current members, including vice-president Merhyl Shevill, joined in the 1980s.

Early meetings were held at the homes of Jennie Shute and Pat Lack.

In 1985 the group’s numbers had expanded to such a degree that a move to St Paul’s hall in Cross Street, Cleveland was needed.

The group relocated again on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 to the Cleveland-Thornlands Cricket Club at Henry Ziegenfusz Park, Fitzroy Street, Cleveland.

The group continues to meet there on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, except December and January.

Meetings are from 9am until noon.

A total of 26 members attended the anniversary lunch celebration on Tuesday.

It was held at the Redlands Sporting Club at Wellington Point.

The group holds an annual open day Warped and Twisted at Redland Performing Arts Centre, Middle Street, Cleveland on the third Tuesday of June.
