ENVIRONMENT POOR SECOND
B. Bradford's letter (RCB, Sept 5) expresses the opinion of many ratepayers regarding Redland City Council decisions.
It highlights council's lack of consideration for the environment it should protect.
It also indicates a lack of consideration for infrastructure to make Redlands a more attractive and liveable city.
Development greed has destroyed widlife habitat and decimated a once abundant koala population. I came to the Redlands 30 years ago expecting those valuable assets to be protected. Other councils balance development and provide facilities that rates were meant for.
We elect councillors expecting they will use ratepayer money to provide facilities for a better lifestyle.
A newspaper comparison shows Redlands pays the highest rates in SEQ which many find difficult to pay. What improvements have council provided in the past five years?
Redlands must be the only city without a central park and no first-class sporting complex. Parking has been neglected and despite having a bayside position, there is no caravan park.
Council talks tourism yet hides the tourist information centre at Indigiscapes.
Council decisions appear to favour developers, with some approvals being made outside council's own building code. A confidentiality agreement has been signed over the Toondah redevelopment proposal.
That either advantages the developer or denies ratepayers information. The mayor indicated Toondah would be without ratepayer cost. A previous mayor said in the Bayside Bulletin that ratepayers subsidise developer infrastructure costs up to 60 per cent. That’s money that could be used to fix facility neglect.

PARKING NIGHTMARE
TRY to find a parking spot on Middle or Bloomfield streets and see how hard it is.
Mr Pearson (RCB, Aug 22) should be applauded for bringing up the issue of council selling ratepayer-funded car parks. Council seems not to care about local amenities or recreational facilities in Cleveland.
The comment from the council “spokesperson” that council had a strategy to create a more walkable and connected centre makes the unwanted environmental disaster that is Toondah Harbour look ridiculous as it is too far away from the town centre to be walkable or connected.
The Toondah proposal is nothing but a beachfront land grab by developers.
Councillors have forgotten who pays their way and will be repaid at the next election.

DOGS AT MARKETS OK
I AM here on holiday to visit my family at Victoria Point. I live in Cambodia and have many animals I have rescued.
I went to the markets at Cleveland as I knew this was a place for people to get together and that people can bring their dogs.
I am upset to read the article (RCB, Sept 19) about tripping over dogs at the market. While I was there I tripped over an old person’s scooter. I am tall and the scooter was lower than me so it was not easy to see.
Should they ban scooters or walking sticks for the old?

MURDEROUS EVENT
AS I walked along the shore this afternoon I watched a brahminy kite riding the thermals and scanning the water for food.
Suddenly a murder of crows scrambled out of the trees and mobbed the intruder.
With wings beating furiously, the kite tried to out-climb the vengeful crows. To no avail they out-flanked and harassed him until he dived for the sanctuary of the scrub.
Oh Malcolm, what a metaphor, you have been riding the thermals of your own hot air for so long, that 35 crows rose up against you. Your aftermath speech to the nation reeked of feigned piety and did nothing to assuage the rage.

BOYS CLUB OF BOWMAN
SO we have women leaving the Liberal Party due to bullying. As Germaine Greer pointed out the Liberals are a boys club and as such are bullies.
MP Andrew Laming was challenged for his safe seat of Bowman and had the support of the boys club. As a result, those that challenged Laming were accused of being trouble makers and suspended.
Fairfax Media (another boys club) also got into the push to keep Laming in his cushy post with an editorial (RCB, Sept 19).
The saddest loss is that one of our best foreign ministers, Julie Bishop, is now on the back bench. For obvious reasons she cannot join the club. She is the greatest asset the Liberals have. Meantime we are stuck with an MP because he is a club member.

GET IT RIGHT
MANY people call our hospital the Redlands Hospital whereas it is Redland Hospital. Talking about names, why do we have a Point Halloran but the road is Point O’Halloran and are we going to be called Redlands Coast or the Redland Coast?

THANKS EVERYONE
WE want to thank everyone that was in the Victoria Point Cineplex on August 24 for being so understanding as the lights came on and the movie was stopped while we helped my friend get to an ambulance.
A special thank you to the lady in the red top. I am so glad you knew to check her. The cinema manager was a great help and the paramedics and hospital staff were good too.
My friend was taken to Redland Hospital and stayed overnight. It was her birthday and it is one we will never forget.
