YEAR 5 students from Faith Lutheran College have raised $1200 for drought-affected farmers.
Teacher Jodee Armstrong said they had been learning about service during Christian Studies.
“Students had explored how they can show service to others through their actions and words,” Mrs Armstong said.
They had also been learning about the drought.
“The students began to consider the idea of somehow helping the farmers.
“They came up with different ideas and put forward their proposals to the Junior School principal Eloise Beveridge.”
Students came up with ideas like a bake stall, hot chocolate stall, colouring-in competition, a guess-the-number-of-lollies in the jar competition and making bath bombs to sell to the teachers.
“The students gathered in groups to decide what they needed to do to put their ideas into action,” Mrs Armstrong said.
They researched droughts and the impact on communities and presented this at a school assembly.
“They designed posters, wrote speeches to advertise their events to classes, organised rosters and donated goods for the stalls,” she said.
“This has been a fantastic learning opportunity for the students. I have been impressed with their initiative, enthusiasm and compassion for others.
“The students have taken a thoughtful and productive approach to turn their fundraising ideas into a reality.”
Mrs Armstrong said the money raised would be matched by Coles supermarkets, bringing the total to $2400.
