A set of mismatched bowls donated to a family in crisis in 2015 is now in the hands of a national bowls champion.
Zayah Morgan, 14, of Russell Island started using the set of three at the Russell Island club as therapy when her family home was burned. This was the beginning of a love of the sport and a potential career for Zayah.
Zayah competed in the Australian under 18 championships held at Capalaba from October 3 to 6, bringing home a gold medal for fours, a silver for being a member of the best overall State team and a bronze in triples. She was also one of five girls to win Queensland’s top female trophy.
On October 6 and 7, Zayah won zone championship and will compete in the State pennant finals at Tweed Heads on November 10 and 11.
She is coached by Maria Rigby, of Thorneside as a member of the Enogerra Eagles.
Zayah’s mother Debra said the original donation of the bowls had been an unusual gift, but one for which she was forever grateful.
“Who could have guessed where this would lead to? Zayah started having roll ups at Russell Island, but this club closes for three months, so her grand father took her to play juniors at Capalaba,” Mrs Morgan said.
Grandfather Denis Morgan of Thornlands is a social player at the Capalaba club.
“I hope she continues to improve her skills and play good games. No words can describe how proud I am of her. She’s a national champion at the age of 14,” Mrs Morgan said.
