WHITE may be the traditional colour of cricket uniforms but players at the Coochiemudlo Island sporting oval last weekend were clad in their brightest pinks.
About 60 people went to the oval on Saturday, October 27 for the Pink Up Coochie Cricket Day, held in support of the McGrath Foundation.
The event took place as part of the foundation’s month-long Pink Up Your Town fundraising initiative, which calls for small towns to dress in pink and raise money to support families battling breast cancer.
Those taking part in the charity cricket match raised more than $900, bringing Coochie’s Pink Up total to $2700.
Event coordinator Debi Sayer said the highlight of the day was watching community members having a ball in support of a good cause.
“Many laughs were had as the rules of the game were bent a lot,” she said.
Money raised will go towards free support and care from McGrath nurses for breast cancer patients and their families.
Ms Sayer said generous donations from the community made the day a great success.
“The highlight would have been the drawing of the raffles, including a three-night holiday at the adults-only resort of Matamanoa, which was donated by a local resident Jill Palise,” she said.
The day’s oldest player was Stan Harris, 87.
The Pink Up Coochie Cricket Day came during the final weekend of the McGrath Foundation’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
