THERE is all the usual buzz around the Melbourne Cup with events across the city on Tuesday.
Urban Outlet owner Renae Jackson said boater hats like the one Elle McPherson wore on the weekend’s Derby Day and hems below the knee could be expected this racing season.
“You can expect to see florals, block colours and even maxis stepping out but the biggest trend is the inclusion of ruffles and flounces to give a soft feminine look,” Ms Jackson said.
While Victorians have enjoyed a public holiday for the Cup since 1877, many in the Redlands enjoy lunch at a city club and take part in an office or club sweep.
The Bureau of Meteorology has urged those in Melbourne to pack a poncho or umbrella as up to 33 millimetres of rain were expected to drench the city within 48 hours.
There were no such fears in the Redlands, with temperatures expected to soar to 31 degrees on Melbourne Cup day.
