REDLANDS residents are encouraged to get active in a low-pressure environment with a free family fitness challenge at Cleveland Point on December 9.
Hosted by local fitness organisation Fitstuff, the challenge will see people sweat through a 45 minute circuit session, followed by 10 minutes of yoga and stretching and a game of tug of war.
An obstacle course for children will also be set up on the day.
Event promoter Sharon Cliffe said the body weight-based exercise circuit would be adaptable to any skill level.
“It’s about getting off the couch and into fresh air,” she said.
“It’s about pushing and challenging yourself in a non-competitive environment.”
Fitstuff fitness director Nathan Devlin said the event encouraged everyone to become active.
“The message is for parents to start setting better examples for their children by getting active,” he said.
“(It is also for) anyone who sits down all day for work and has lost their zest for life.”
Mr Devlin said people who exercised regularly might live longer, healthier and happier, be more present with themselves and their family, have better mental and physical health and have reduced risk of lifestyle diseases.
Ms Cliffe said the event also provided an opportunity for people to get nutrition and fitness tips from experts including instructors from Fitstuff and Capalaba gym Elite Performance, a yoga instructor and a nutritionist.
People will also be able to win prizes donated by local businesses, such as free fitness sessions and wellness packages.
The event coincides with the Redland City Council’s Redlands Healthy and Active Program, which runs from October 8 to December 16.
During the program, fitness sessions are held at parks around the Redlands for the 10 weeks of the school term.
While the Family Fitness Challenge is not a part of the RHAP, Ms Cliffe said Fitstuff was heavily involved in the program, and the challenge was a free taster of their twice-weekly RHAP sessions.
The Family Fitness Challenge will take place from 7am to 7.45am on December 9 at Cleveland Point Recreation Reserve.
