VICTORIA Point triathlete Luke Harvey has been recognised for winning the World Triathlon Sprint Championships for the second consecutive year.
Harvey successfully defended the 16 to 19 age group title that he had won last year in Rotterdam.
Acknowledging him during a council meeting last week, Cr Paul Mitchell said Harvey’s efforts showed that if someone worked hard enough, they could achieve anything.
Harvey did his first triathlon six years ago and was immediately hooked.
After coming sixth in his first event at Raby Bay, Harvey went on to place second in his next competition.
In 2016, Harvey was awarded the Australian Olympic Committee’s Pierre de Coubertin Award for achievements and values consistent with the Olympic movement.
Harvey was selected to carry the Queens’ Baton in the run-up to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games earlier this year.
The Victoria Point State High School graduate said his next goal was to compete at next year’s World Titles in the junior elite division.
Harvey currently juggles working as a disability carer and in a cafe, with being an athlete.
“I am hoping that I will go down as a professional athlete,” he said.
