EFFORTS are under way to build a community garden at Duncan Jenkins Eucalypt Park on Fryar Road, Victoria Point.
Cr Lance Hewlett said the park had been chosen as most suitable given its size and amenity.
“This is an exciting neighbourhood initiative which, if successful, will bring the community together in an under-utilised public open space,” he said.
“It will not only activate the space but also create a sense of place in our local community, providing fresh, safe, affordable fruit and vegetables and helping to relieve stress and increase sense of wellness and getting people active.
“Community gardens have also proven to improve the real estate values of properties in the area they are established.”
It is expected that the garden, to be established next year, would include a communal area, plots, orchard and edible natives.
The Bayside Community Garden group and council will hold an information stall at the park on Sunday, November 25 from 9am to 11am.
Project members and council officers will answer questions and listen to suggestions for the garden.
Light refreshments will be available and people can sign up as members of the group.
Neighbouring residents can have their say on the proposal by emailing communityprojects@redland.qld.gov.au before November 30.
