A WELLINGTON Point resident has celebrated her 100th birthday in the company of family and friends.
Noreen Stewart turned 100 on Sunday, marking the occasion with a gathering of loved ones, decorations and a big chocolate cake.
Born at Gympie in 1918, she moved to Brisbane when she was five years old.
Mrs Stewart spent the early years of her career working as a seamstress, before becoming a tram conductress during the war.
“That’s where she met my father, who was a tram driver,” daughter Lorraine Stewart said.
Mrs Stewart was an avid reader and loved watching the football.
“My mother was always bright as a button,” Ms Stewart said.
“She enjoyed laughter and people. She was just a character.”
“She raised us all with a great sense of humour and has retained hers to this day,” grand-daughter Katherine Calvert said.
Mrs Stewart – a resident at Wellington Park Private Care – is one of nine children, and has three children, three grand-children and five great-grandchildren.
A family-oriented woman, she celebrated her birthday in the company of 25 family members and friends who travelled from Maryborough, Kilcoy, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and Beaudesert.
Mrs Stewart spent the day opening presents and cards, including letters from the queen, the prime minister and the governor general.
“She laughed at that,” Ms Stewart said.
“She always thought there was a lot of hoo-hah surrounding royalty.”
Ms Calvert said the day was a valuable opportunity for family to come together.
“Everyone enjoyed reminiscing about the fun times we have all shared in days gone by,” she said.
“The celebration bought much joy to everyone.”
