From NAPLAN to school formals, take a look back at 2018 in education.
January
The beginning of 2018 saw students across the Redlands heading back to school. Three sisters who took different educational paths shone a light on the debate between public and private education. Read the story here.
February
The new school year was well underway in February, and the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority released OP scores from 2017. Read the story here.
March
Redlands schools joined their peers across the nation to stand against bullying on the eighth annual National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Read the story here.
April
April marked a momentous occasion for Cleveland State School, which celebrated its 150th anniversary this year. The school opened on April 27 1868, and the anniversary was marked by a new mural and a historical display in the school library containing items recovered from an 1868 time capsule. May
Students in years three, five, seven and nine sat their NAPLAN tests in May. 2018 was the first year of the online rollout, which aimed to see all students taking the test online within three years. Read the story here.
June
June marked the start of the mid-year school holidays. Cleveland District State High School student Kasey Knight took out the top prize at the Queensland Ag Shows’ Young Judges State Finals for meat sheep breeds. Read the story here.
July
July brought mid-year formal season for some Redlands schools, including Carmel College and Cleveland District State High School.
August
Alexandra Hills State High School held the Innovate Redland City STEM competition on National Science Week after the success of last year’s inaugural event. The event brought schools together to test their science and technology skills. Read the story here.
September
Redlands high school students picked up hammers and trowels to test their skills at the Construction Skills Queensland Try a Trade event. They gained hands-on experience in bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry and electrical trades. Read the story here.
October
Redlands schools received nearly $30,000 in sports gear from Coles after collecting more than 728,000 vouchers at their local supermarkets through Coles’ Sports for Schools program. Read the story here.
November
The school year came to a triumphant close for the graduating year 12 cohort. November also brought formal season for schools including Wellington Point State High School, Victoria Point State High School, Redlands College, Redland District Special School and Alexandra Hills State High School.
