THE Mount Cotton Scout Group was the first to complete a program for Scouts developed by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to help children stay safe.
Bruce and Denise Morcombe and Scout Queensland deputy chief commissioner Geoff Doo presented the Scouts who took part with Keeping Kids Safe badges.
The foundation produced the program to support young people to develop personal safety skills and have the ability to recognise, react and report when they felt unsafe.
Understanding respectful relationships was a key learning area within the program, which aligned with the Scouts Queensland Child Safe Scouting Policy.
Denise Morcombe said that providing children with the opportunity to develop safety skills was one of the most precious gifts we could give to them and ourselves.
Daniel Morcombe Foundation chief executive Holly Brennan said she had loved working with the Mount Cotton Scout Group.
“The program is taught by Scout leaders and takes around five weeks,” Ms Brennan said.
“The dedication to teaching children the skills to be safe has been an inspiration to me as a child protection educator.”
Cub Scout leader David Bates recognised those who had taken part.
“I’m so proud of my Cub Scouts who have really engaged with the program beyond my highest hopes,” Mr Bates said.
“They have walked out of here 10 feet taller.”
