BY 2015, the number of female solicitors in Australia was almost the same as male solicitors, but their estimated income was calculated to be approximately 10 percent lower compared to the profession as a whole.
What’s more, less than a tenth of female private practitioners were principal solicitors.
At the time, solicitor Kelli Martin had been practicing law for seven years working on family, criminal and domestic violence matters and experiencing these statistics first hand.
In that same year, the Australian Institute of Criminology announced one in five women were killed by their partner or former partner.
With these shocking statistics in mind, Kelli wanted to make a difference and KLM solicitors was established in Nundah.
“I realised that not only did the industry need to change, so too did the statistics surrounding domestic violence,” she said.
As director and principal, Kelli has built a solid foundation with KLM Solicitors with 17 staff and another two employees beginning in 2019, as well as three locations including Cleveland.
The hard work and dedication has paid off with the firm winning Best Small Business at the 2018 Redland BaR Awards.
This after being awarded the Redlands Business of the Month back in April.
“The entire team is honoured to have received these awards, validating the hard work of all our staff, firm wide,” Kelli said.
KLM Solicitors goes above and beyond for their clients, specialising in family, criminal, domestic violence and wills and estates.
“We have a genuine interest in our clients and seeing an outcome that doesn’t just provide short term resolutions. We go above and beyond for our clients and are recognised for our accessibility both during and outside business hours.”
Kelli said that while being the first port of call for both the perpetrators and victims of domestic violence was integral in the legal process, change was not possible without the hard and consistent work of a number of not for profit organisations.
KLM Solicitors has raised tens of thousands of dollars for a number of incredible organisations including Women’s Legal Service, Nundah Community Service, Red Rose Foundation and Night Ninjas.
Community involvement includes regular volunteering where solicitors give free legal advice.
In May 2019, Kelli will dance for 1000 attendees at Brisbane City Hall to raise money for Women’s Legal Service in the annual Dancing CEOs event and she recently presented Red Rose Foundation more than $6000 after participating in the annual Running CEOs event.
