DESIGN work for traffic lights at the busy Anita Street intersection at Redland Bay will begin next year.
The announcement was made by Redlands MP Kim Richards earlier this month via a video posted to her Facebook page.
Ms Richards said the traffic lights would be delivered as part of a $5 million election promise to upgrade the dangerous T-junction at Cleveland-Redland Bay Road.
“The Anita Street upgrade has been long awaited and I’m pleased to be delivering on my promise to the community,” she said.
A Main Roads Department spokesperson said consultation would begin early next year.
Surveyors had visited the intersection in November to support the beginning of design work, with the upgrades tipped to begin by mid-2020.
Locals have called for upgrades for the past 15 years.
Residents were worried about the safety motorists at the intersection, especially those turning right from Anita Street onto Cleveland-Redland Bay Road.
The busy 80-kilometre/hr hour stretch was also crossed by school children and pedestrians using nearby bus stops.
Funding for the project was pledged by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk during Ms Richards’ election campaign last year.
Ms Palaszczuk visited the Redlands on the eve of last year’s election to release a plan for the bayside, which included $5 million for Anita Street intersection upgrades.
