DRIVERS speeding through traffic lights along Old Cleveland Road at Coorparoo are being caught on camera.
The high-risk intersection at Cavendish Road was one of eight across Queensland to have red light speed cameras activated on Monday.
Queensland Police Service Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said the cameras could detect speeding drivers and motorists driving illegally through red lights.
The cameras would operate non-stop to catch dangerous drivers, he said.
“We want drivers to comply with traffic light signals and the speed limit through intersections,” he said.
“The combined red light and speed cameras have proven to reduce the incidence of speeding and red light running at these intersections.”
Assistant Commissioner Keating said crashes caused by drivers speeding through intersections, like at traffic lights, were more likely to be T-bone crashes.
These had a higher chance of causing death or serious injury.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said 42 people had been killed and more than 3000 hurt in crashes at traffic lights across Queensland in the past five years.
Eleven per cent of all serious causalities on Queensland roads had occurred at intersections with traffic lights, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the old red light camera at the Old Cleveland Road intersection at Cavendish Road had been upgraded with the red light speed camera system.
Red light speed cameras operational from Monday at:
– Burleigh Waters: Bermuda Street and Christine Avenue intersection
– Coorparoo: Old Cleveland Road and Cavendish Road intersection
– Gladstone Central: Glenlyon Street and Tank Street intersection
– Kedron: Lutwyche Road and Kedron Park Road intersection
– Kippa-Ring: Anzac Avenue Road and Boardman Road intersection
– Lutwyche: Lutwyche Road and Norman Avenue intersection
– Morayfield: Morayfield Road and Caboolture River Road intersection
– Southport: Smith Street and Kumbari Avenue intersection
