When Aileen Scott joined Redlands Toastmasters Club after completing a Speechcraft course in 2012, she was hoping to hone her public speaking skills.
Looking back on that time she acknowledges that she has become not only a better speaker, but also a better thinker and a better listener.
For a challenge, Aileen participates in the optional annual speech contests.
Last year she won three of the four contests at her Redlands club, and went on to compete at area level, where she took first place in the impromptu speaking and speech evaluation contests.
In March she’ll be competing against the winners from six areas across Eastern Brisbane, before the district finals in May.
“Initially I would never have thought I could compete in front of a large audience, but the support and feedback our members provide each other has helped me believe in myself and extend my comfort zone,” Aileen said.
“I gain confidence every time I speak in front of a different audience.”
Aileen began her Toastmasters journey by participating in a six week Speechcraft course.
New members can join a club at any time, but Aileen feels that Speechcraft gave her an extra boost of confidence, as the participants did everything from giving impromptu and prepared speeches to being the emcee in just six sessions.
Toastmasters will help you conquer your fears, improve your communication and leadership skills and build your confidence as you work to reach your personal and professional goals.
As a bonus you’ll find yourself helping others to do the same.
You will learn how to confidently organise, write and deliver presentations.
And you can practice by giving speeches in your club among people who want to help you improve and watch you succeed.
By attending meetings, you will strengthen your ability to listen, learn to evaluate others’ ideas and practice leadership skills.
A club meeting isn’t structured like a classroom with an instructor and you will embark on a journey of self-development that will help you to enhance your skills.
The Capalaba and Redlands clubs meet regularly in a supportive group environment where people with diverse skill sets and backgrounds come together to practice their skills and exchange valuable feedback with each other.
A rare opportunity to enrol in a Toastmasters Speechcraft course is available at Capalaba Toastmasters Club.
This is the perfect opportunity to begin 2019 with a positive and supportive self-improvement program.
