THE Older Women's Network of Capalaba will host its International Women's Day event in celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women.

OWN will host its event - featuring a keynote speech and a morning tea - at Capalaba Uniting Church on Wednesday, March 6.

Naomi Jarvis from OWN said Australia's International Women's Day theme was More Powerful Together, and the group was proud to be celebrating that message.

"(Older women especially) should celebrate International Women's Day and all the knowledge and experience they have gained throughout the years," Ms Jarvis said.

"Older women have a lot to be proud of."

The event will feature speaker Julie Porteous, former president of University of the Third Age and 2014 Redlands Senior Citizen of the Year.

Ms Jarvis said Ms Porteous had been asked to speak due to her work as U3A president, inspiring other seniors to improve their minds and bodies.

"The (IWD) event will offer support and companionship with other women (and) the opportunity to witness an inspirational speaker," Ms Jarvis said.

Ms Jarvis said OWN, which had recently celebrated its fourth birthday, brought women together to gain new skills and make friends.

"Our group helps to stop women from all backgrounds from being isolated in their homes," she said.

"Getting out of the house and being in the company of other women helps them feel self worth."

She added that the group regularly met to hear from speakers and discuss news and events, as well as topics like healthy ageing and companionship.

The Older Women's Network International Women's Day event will be held at the Capalaba Uniting Church on Wednesday, March 6 from 9am until 11:30am.

Cost is $5 and includes morning tea.
