BIRKDALE'S Chumley Warner's has been named among the top 10 fish and chip shops in the country in the 2019 Uniquely Aussie Awards.
The awards, run by online travel site Wotif, saw thousands of Australians submit their favourite destinations in six categories - best swimming spot, best main street, best roadside pitstop, best sausage roll, best fish and chip shop and best regional Chinese restaurant.
Chumley Warner's, which serves traditional UK-style food, was placed eighth on the list.
Store co-owner Louise Warner said the secret to the store's popularity, especially among Brits, was attention to detail.
"It's just keeping it very traditional, so it's just like what you would get when you go to your local chippy back in the UK," she said.
"We import everything from the UK, from the mushy peas to to the curry sauce, the batter, the oil we use to fry."
Chumley Warner's began 10 years ago as a shop selling British confectionery, and a section of the store is still dedicated to selling sweets and crisps.
"You can't call them lollies and you can't call them chips," Mrs Warner said.
A demand from the local community led to husband Adrian Warner heading back to England to learn the ropes in a traditional British fish and chip shop.
Chumley Warner's has since expanded to cover other UK cuisines.
"The Scottish love the black pudding and the haggis, and also the deep fried pizza," Mrs Warner said.
"The Irish go for battered sausage, chips and curry sauce.
"We even have BBC Radio 2 playing so people can hear about all the traffic jams on the M25.
"I think this is an amazing place that we live in, and having this shop just helps people adjust to life in the Redlands.
"It's just a different way of doing fish and chips, no better or worse than the Australian way.
"It's how people were brought up."
Mrs Warner said the shop had ignited many debates between Brits and Australians and served as a cultural experience for people, including her children, who had moved to Australia from the UK at a young age.
"People come and they like to hear the accents, so they come in and reminisce and it's a great atmosphere," she said.
Wotif managing director Daniel Finch said the Uniquely Aussie Awards represented experiences locals had come to love.
“You can’t argue with the people’s choice and we’re thrilled to be able to shine a spotlight on these deserving local businesses and experiences," he said.
