South of the River Community Band presents a charity concert featuring The Queen Symphony on June 7 to raise funds for The Redland Foundation and its support of victims of domestic and family violence in the Redlands. The concert will be staged at Redland Performing Arts Centre, Cleveland.
Funds raised from the concert will be paid to the Maybanke Association Inc., which is establishing four new shelters in the community for victims.
Band conductor Jacob Cavanough said that the band supported its local community with an annual charity concert.
"The profits go to a charity chosen by the members. This will be our third annual charity concert, and we are very much looking forward to inviting our audience to experience the music we have chosen," Mr Cavanough said.
The concert is named after our major work The Queen Symphony, written by Tolga Keshif and based on the music of Freddie Mercury and the iconic band Queen. The concert will also include well-known and memorable works derived from folk music of Australia, the United Kingdom and Asia.
Guest conductors include Desmond Ng (Dunman High School, Sembawang Wind Orchestra, Singapore) and brass teacher and former head of performance music at Redlands College, Phil Davis.
Mr Cavanough said the band would present baked goods at intermission and would mingle with the audience.
"All members are volunteers and play for the love of it. A lot of us are local to the Redlands. The community feel of our band really shines in the way our members band together to be such great advocates for important causes within our community," he said.
A GoFundMe account (gofundme.com/srcb2019) has been set up for this concert to help offset costs.
Founded in 2015, South of the River community band is a passionate, dedicated group of friends and musicians determined to bring the joy of playing in a concert band closer to home for a wide range of musicians. More on srcb.org.au
