Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) can last a lifetime and result in high healthcare costs.
According to Pilates with Sarah owner, physiotherapist Sarah Venables, NSLBP is a major cause for long term sickness in the workforce.
"Physiotherapy research has shown that anyone who has experienced at least one episode of lower back pain in the past will have weaker spinal muscles," Sarah said.
"Research has also shown the need to specifically retrain your deep stabilizing muscles after an injury to reduce the likelihood of further episodes and aid a quicker recovery."
Clinical exercise taught by a physiotherapist can help people with hip, back, neck or shoulder problems by conditioning the deeper, supporting muscles of the body to improve posture, stability, balance and coordination.
It focuses on quality of movement and re-learning correct movement patterns and postures.
The health benefits of clinical exercise taught by a physiotherapist include:
- Improved flexibility and posture
- Increased core muscle strength and tone in abdominal, lower back, hips and buttocks
- Balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body
- Enhanced muscular control of back and limbs
- Improved stabilisation of your spine
- Improved Pelvic Floor strength
- Rehabilitation or prevention of injuries related to muscle imbalances
- Improved physical coordination and balance
- Relaxed shoulders, neck and upper back
- Safe rehabilitation of joint and spinal injuries
- Prevention of musculoskeletal injuries
- Increased body awareness
- Stress management and relaxation
