Apple has unveiled a new form of online service sign-in which the company says is more secure than existing systems offered by Google and Facebook.
The company has announced Sign in with Apple, a feature that will enable users to securely log in to websites using their Apple ID.
Currently, similar features exist which enable users to sign in to some websites or services using a Google or Facebook account, but often in exchange for a range of personal information associated with those accounts.
The new Apple feature will confirm a user's identity without sharing any information with the site in question, and authenticate using secure Apple features such as Face ID and Touch ID.
The technology giant has long advocated the use of encryption technology and the security of personal data, as well as distancing itself from firms such as Google and Facebook which use data to target advertising to users.
The new sign-in feature will give users the option to automatically sign in with their Apple credentials, rather than providing social media account details or filling out a form that asks for their details.
"Instead of using a social account or filling out forms, verifying email addresses or choosing passwords, customers can simply use their Apple ID to authenticate and Apple will protect users' privacy by providing developers with a unique random ID," Apple said of the new feature.
"Even in cases where developers choose to ask for a name and email address, users have the option to keep their email address private and share a unique random email address instead."
This random email address will forward any correspondence to a user's real email address, but this can be switched off should a user want to stop receiving emails from a certain service.
Apple also said the feature will not "track your activity and you're in control of your data".
It will begin to roll out as part of iOS 13, which is due to be released to the public inthe second half of 2019.
