The Redlands branch of Cancer Council Queensland will hold its annual memory tree remembrance ceremony at Raby Bay Harbour Park on Sunday, July 21 from 11:30am.
The Cancer Council will provide ribbons which can be placed on the tree's branches as a tribute to lost loved ones.
Queensland Cancer Council's Redlands branch secretary Pam Tranter said the memory tree ceremony was steeped in history having replaced the Terry Fox fun run in the late 1990s.
She said a few Redlands locals were responsible for getting it off the ground.
"Terry Fox's mother kept in touch with people in the Redlands, particularly Jill Bloomer," she said.
"Jill was very much a mover and shaker in the Redlands in those days and they kept up correspondence for years after Terry died.
"Because they wanted to start something as a tangible remembrance place, and inspired by the song Tie a ribbon around the ole oak tree, they asked the council if they could have a tree somewhere."
Ms Tranter said the ceremony was open to anyone who has lost a loved one.
"While it's a memory tree started by the Cancer Council, it's not just for people we've lost to cancer," she said.
"It's for anyone feeling for someone they've lost.
"It's about placing a ribbon for those we've loved and lost as a tangible remembrance of them - these were the words Jill used to me."
The Cancer Council volunteers will take a picnic lunch and invite others to do the same.
"We always have a little picnic in the park at the memory tree and we do that each year in July because that was when it started," Ms Tranter said.
"If people want to talk about their loved ones over lunch that's fine, if they don't, that's fine too."
