DENTAL anxiety is alive and real for many who don't feel relaxed and safe during their regular check up.
This was an issue Brisbane dentist Dr Jena Ward wanted to do something about.
More than two years ago, she left the corporate world of dentistry to open her own private practice in Capalaba.
Skye Dental became a place where patients didn't feel like a number, where you could visit to feel safe and not judged, and to have the same familiar face each time you came to see the dentist.
Born and bred in Queensland, Dr Ward always knew she wanted to be in the health industry from a very young age.
At 13 she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, and saw 14 different doctors before she was diagnosed with cancer. She knows the importance of being thorough, taking time to really talk, listen and communicate with patients.
Dr Ward believes this is an area that is lacking in dentistry, and not enough importance is put on a good bedside manner.
She is also backed by an incredible team who truly love what they do.
"My team are the happiest and most professional group of people, and really care about our patients," she said. "Our receptionist was babysitting a patient's child and I overheard one of my nurses offer to drive home an elderly lady after her treatment."
Dr Ward especially wanted to cater for anxious patients and has brought in options for treatment such as sedation and twilight dentistry, a mild anxiety reducing sedation, so that patients can feel relaxed and their nerves eased.
"Due to extensive continuing professional development, our dentists are aware of the problems that many ordinary dentists never check - airways and breathing, orthodontic treatments such as invisible braces, headache and jaw issues, and whole tooth replacement with implants," she said.

Staff are also able to tend to people who are in pain, needing emergency treatment quickly and efficiently - and they are great with kids.
Said Dr Ward, old technology can sometimes miss important things to help get to the correct diagnosis.
"The dental practice utilises the very latest technology and is unique in the fact that you aren't just referred off after every visit."
Dr Ward has volunteered her dental services overseas in third world countries and genuinely loves what she does. However, it's not just about teeth at Skye Dental.
She believes Australia is the luckiest place in the world and the Skye Dental team plans to become even more involved in the local community by participating with local school fetes and community events in the Redlands area.
