REDLANDS IndigiScapes Nursery will offer free native plants in exchange for buckets of weeds over the next two weekends as part of a Redland City Council initiative called Trees for Weeds Day.
Mayor Karen Williams said the centre would offer up to five native plants per person - one for each bag or bucket of weeds surrendered.
The initiative aims to reduce the number of invasive weeds that threaten native wildlife and habitats.
"Some of our most common garden plants are prolific weeds, which compete with native species that provide essential food and shelter for a variety of wildlife," Cr Williams Said.
"When these weeds escape into surrounding bushland they can also impact the local wildlife corridors here on Redlands Coast."
This year's focus will be on the removal of devils fig, Singapore daisy, salvania and leucaena weeds.
Trees for Weeds day will be held at Redlands IndigiScapes Centre Nursery at 17 Runnymede Rd, Capalaba on Saturday, September 7 from 9am to 1pm.
The bay islands will also have the chance to participate in this year's event on Saturday, September 14 at Coochiemudlo Island jetty, Macleay Island Progress Hall, Point Lookout Bushcare Nursery, Russell Island Public Pool car park, Lamb Island jetty car park or Karragarra Community Gardens from 8.30am to 10.30am.
