UPDATE 11.45PM: Police have spoken to a man who was supposedly swimming to North Stradbroke Island.
Reports say he is safe and well.
EARLIER: Police fear for the safety of a man who may be trying to swim from the Redland Bay mainland to North Stradbroke Island.
They have asked for boaties and others to keep a lookout as they try to find the man.
Police said that the man was in the water off Redland Bay when he told two kayakers he was swimming to Stradbroke Island.
Police hold concerns for his safety due to high winds producing rough weather conditions in Moreton Bay.
As the crow flies, it's about 1.5 kilometres from the Redland Bay ferry terminal to Stradbroke but there are a maze of islands in between, some no more than uninhabited mangrove outcrops.
The substantial Russell Island also lies between the two.
The Weather Bureau has a strong wind warning out for the bay and has recorded gusts to 54km/hr in the Spitfire Channel this afternoon, with rough seas.
It has forecast seas to 1.5 metres as the tide rises this evening.
Police are urging anyone with information about the man or his whereabouts to contact police.
A land and sea search has failed to locate him as police seek further information on the unusual incident.
