UPDATE, 7.35pm
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises there is a bushfire in Mount Barney National Park and conditions could get worse.
You need to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan. If you do not have a plan, or intend to leave, you should be ready to leave the area because the situation could get worse quickly.
At 7.35pm the large, fast moving bushfire was burning in inaccessible land in Mount Barney National Park.
The fire is travelling in a north-easterly direction towards Barney View and Palen Creek.
It is likely to impact Barney View, Palen Creek and areas south to the Queensland border.
The Mount Lindesay Highway is currently closed south of Rathdowney. Police are on scene managing traffic.
Those choosing to self-evacuate should travel north towards Rathdowney.
UPDATE, 4.25pm
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises there is a bushfire burning between Woodenbong in northern New South Wales and Mount Barney, and conditions could get worse.
Residents in Rathdowney and surrounding areas are advised to keep up to date and decide what actions you will take if the situation changes.
At 4.25pm a very large bushfire was travelling in a northerly direction from Mount Nothofague National Park and Mount Barney.
Queensland Police Service has closed the Mount Lindsey Highway south of Rathdowney as a result of this fire.
UPDATE, 2.45pm Tuesday
Monday QFES advised there was a bushfire in northern New South Wales and conditions could get worse.
They advised people at Rathdowney and surrounding areas to keep up to date and decide what actions to take if the situation changed.
A spokeswoman for QFES said a large bushfire was travelling in a northerly direction from Mount Nothofague National Park heading towards Queensland.
She said the fire covered a large area and including the Cunningham Highway, Mt Barney and Maroon.
"The reason people in Rathdowney were mentioned in the alert was because with the predicted winds, Rathdowney was likely to be impacted by smoke," she said.
"There is no fire near Rathdowney at this time."
QFES said people in the area would be affected by smoke in the coming days, with reduced visibility and air quality.
Properties are not under direct threat at this time. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if you believe you or your property is under threat.

People in the area will be affected by smoke in the coming days, which will reduce visibility and air quality.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
. Listen to your local radio station or visit the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website for regular updates.
. If you have a bushfire survival plan, refer to it now and be ready to follow it.
. If you do not have a bushfire survival plan, or if your plan is to leave, identify where you will go if the situation changes.
. Close windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure.
. If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by.
. Drive with caution in low visibility conditions.
. Contact your neighbours to see if they need help preparing for the bushfire.
. Consider finding your essential items (e.g., identification documents, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing such as a long-sleeved cotton shirt and trousers, and boots) in case you need to leave.
. Consider what you will do to protect your pets and livestock.
. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
. Advise family and friends of your intended actions if the situation changes.
