SHADOW transport minister Steve Minnikin says council is right to be frustrated by shortfalls in local infrastructure, with the Redlands population set to increase by nearly 40,000 in the next two decades.
It comes after Redland City Council refused to sign off on Victoria Point structure plans until the state government promised more transport infrastructure.
Mr Minnikin toured the area earlier this month with state Redlands candidate Henry Pike and Oodgeroo MP Mark Robinson.
"Both council and the community are clearly fed up with state infrastructure lagging far behind local population growth," Mr Pike said.
"Our congested roads are having a real impact on the quality of life of Redlanders, not just Cleveland-Redland Bay Road, but also Duncan Road, Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road and all of our notorious intersections."
Mr Minnikin said the Redlands population was expected to grow by 36,000 in the next 25 years.
"Redland City Council's concerns about the lack of investment are entirely reasonable - it's disappointing to see that they've been immediately dismissed by the Labor government," he said.
But Transport Minister Mark Bailey said Campbell Newman's government - in which Mr Minnikin was Assistant Transport Minister - cut road and transport funding by $600 million and ignored Redlands roads.
He said funding was locked in to duplicate Cleveland-Redland Bay Road and work would soon start on the Anita Street intersection.
"The new Victoria Point bus station (has opened) and we'll start building bus priority lanes through Carindale to make trips to the Redlands quicker next year," he said.
"People want action on transport and they're getting it from this Labor government."
Mr Robinson said the Redlands needed further investment in public transport services in order to make them more frequent, reliable and affordable.
"We've had a Labor government in Queensland for 25 of the last 30 years and Redland's transport infrastructure has been completely neglected over this time," Mr Robinson said.
"We need to have the right transport priorities for the region, including the duplication of the Cleveland line and delivering the much-promised Eastern Busway."
