North Queensland remains on flood alert after more torrential rain, but forecasters say there won't be a repeat of last year's devastating inundation.
The Bureau of Meteorology on Wednesday issued a major flood warning for the Flinders River near Normanton, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, ahead of further widespread rain in the region.
Vital roads may be cut in the next few days as a slow-moving tropical low pushes west towards the Northern Territory.
The water is then expected to flow downstream, filling channels and spreading out across the flood plain.
There is also a moderate flood warning in place for the Norman River, also near Normanton.
Flood warnings have also been issued for the Cloncurry, Nicholson, Gregory, Leichhardt and Gilbert rivers.
However the BoM says the rivers are not expected to reach the massive peaks of February last year, when hundreds of thousands of cattle died as remote properties were flooded for weeks.
Closer to the coast, residents between Mackay and Innisfail have been warned of flash flooding.
Ingham received 172mm in the 24 hours to midday on Wednesday. Further north, Kuranda recorded 225mm in the same period.
Two schools and a number of roads remain closed in the Burdekin shire, where an extraordinary deluge dumped 458mm of rain in just 24 hours on Monday.
Some businesses and homes sustained water damage during the downpour, however authorities say there have been no injuries.
