A PLAN by Mayor Karen Williams to conduct a full study into constructing a new jetty in the Redlands has been met with mixed reactions.
Cr Williams called for a full study into the feasibility of building a jetty in the area or more specifically Cleveland Point.
Council bought three adjoining blocks of waterfront land near the Cleveland lighthouse for $3.6 million early last year.
Mayoral candidate Claire Richardson said: "A architecturally significant jetty would provide a wonderful facility for locals and visitors. However, before embarking on such a project, a detailed community consultation on possible site options would be necessary".
She said the first steps should be an in-depth consultation with the community before developing a detailed local area plan for the precinct to manage access.
"Options that the community may consider include a jetty and water play park at Thompsons Beach in Victoria Point; an even lower cost solution could be an extension to the existing jetty at Wellington Point. Neither option would require the purchase of additional land," Ms Richardson said.
The Redland City Bulletin Facebook page was inundated with comments when the story was highlighted on Friday.
Grant TK: Whatever the ultimate outcome is...I would like to see an idea that is accessible by water. I dont think the point can tolerate more cars etc. What about a little ship club scenario? Water depths permitting.
Andrew Jones: I reckon an ocean swimming pool world be an awesome idea, somewhere in the Redlands at least.
Dan Franklin: A jetty is the last thing Cleveland Point needs. There isn't enough parking as it is to enjoy the existing attractions. Why do politicians on all levels of government keep wasting money, when basic infrastructure is unsuitable?
John Knights: I guess the fish'n chip shop people would be happy to see another attraction on their doorstep. I wonder if anyone has thought about where these extra visitors will park. The pub won't mind either. Pity about the extra traffic on the only road in or out.
Cr Williams said a feasibility study should be done so the community could be asked whether it supported construction of a new jetty and, if so, where it should be built and what shape it should take.
"We have more than 300km of coastline in the Redlands and a jetty would help us provide better access to Moreton Bay," she said.
