AN eight-strong team of nurses, supported by as many administration officers, are working around the clock, testing and swabbing patients in the COVID-19 fever clinic at Redland Hospital.
Metro South Health has recorded 237 coronavirus cases to date with 135 patients already making a recovery. There have been no deaths reported in the region.
Meet the people working tirelessly on the front lines at Redland Hospital fighting to keep these numbers from growing.
Outpatients registered nurse Natalie Yates said she was happy to volunteer to be in the COVID-19 fever clinic.
"This is an honour to be able to answer people's questions when they are here, to help keep them calm," she said.
The dedicated clinician, and mother, said the support and professionalism of her team kept her mind at ease.
"People are concerned and it can get quite emotional with some patients, so it's important that we support them and support each other," said Ms Yates.
Operational services team member Dianne Alton said while most of the patients presenting at the clinic were concerned, they were grateful and appreciative of the work being done by the team.
"People all react differently to stress and have different coping mechanisms, but we know this is a very unique situation that people have not experienced before," she said.
Fever clinics, servicing and testing the most at risk of COVID-19 are largely located off-site or operating within emergency departments with the highest levels of infection control.
Clinic nurse unit manager Louise Carter said other teams from across Redland Hospital were also playing a huge role including cleaners and security as well as the crew who set up and maintain the clinic.
"We are all working together to make sure our community stays safe and healthy. We are grateful for the support and that everyone is listening to the 'stay at home' message which is making our job much easier," she said.
- If people require testing then they should first call their GP. If they can't access a GP they should call 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) who will be able to direct them to the best location.
