POLICE have reintroduced random speed cameras after data revealed eight more lives had been lost on Queensland's roads this year than at the same point in 2019.
It comes despite a downturn in traffic of more than 30 per cent on the major highways due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Police reportedly stopped using random speed cameras when coronavirus lockdown measures were enforced in March.
They were reintroduced last week ahead of the long weekend after police reported a spike in speeding.
According to open data collated by the Redland City Bulletin, there were more than 3000 active sites for covert, marked and portable speed cameras across Queensland.
Locations are determined based on a number of criteria, including the number of speed related crashes on a stretch of road and whether high-risk speeding is common in the area.
Several sites exist along Redlands' major arterials, with Old Cleveland, Mount Cotton and Cleveland-Redland Bay roads among the hot spots.
Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said it was concerning how many motorists had been clocked travelling at exceptionally high speeds.
"Despite a 30 per cent reduction of vehicles on Queensland roads, we are seeing a significant increase in the proportion of speeding drivers," he said.
"The risks of speeding have not changed and the faster you go, the more consequence there is if you hit something or someone else."
Motorists caught doing less than 13km/h over the speed limit will be slapped with a $177 fine and one demerit point while those clocked at more than 40km/h over the speed limit face a six month driving suspension and a $1245 fine.
