LONG standing Birkdale residents Scott and Nellie Reid are celebrating 50 years of marriage.

The pair met through mutual friends in the 60s and married on September 19, 1970 at Camp Hill Presbyterian Church.
Mrs Reid, 79, grew up on a strawberry and grape farm in Birkdale and Mr Reid, 83, at Norman Park, just a few kilometres outside the Brisbane CBD.
They have three children and four grandchildren, with another due early next year.
The couple built a home at Birkdale in 1970 and have lived in the area ever since, but their connection to the Redlands extends beyond their property.
Mrs Reid grew up in a farmhouse near Barron Road at Birkdale which was burned down by arsons in 2016.
They live next door to community favourite Walter Graves, who sells flowers and plants from his house on Old Cleveland Road East.
Daughter Linda Scheffler, 49, has a street named after her at Birkdale.
Her grandparents, the DiMauros, named the road in honour of Mrs Scheffler after selling off nearby land.
She said her parents were very humble, always willing to help out their children and loved animals.
"Mum would always make the ballet dresses and stuff like that," Mrs Scheffler said.
"I remember us having lots of cats. Dad is a big cat lover, so he always liked to have one or two around.
"We found a stray in our car once and kept her for a long time. They are big animal lovers, my parents."
Mrs Scheffler said her mother spent lots of time in the kitchen and her father enjoyed woodworking.
"It drives mum insane," she said. "He is always whittling away at something on the front verandah.
"Mum is always in the garden or she's cooking. Being Italian, she is always cooking."
Mr Reid made a living as a salesman, meaning many of the family's trips were spent on the road.
"I remember as a kid, during our holidays, we would always drive somewhere like Cairns or Sydney," Mrs Scheffer said.
The couple celebrated their anniversary with family over a Chinese banquet at their home on the weekend. It was a small gathering due to COVID-19 restrictions.
