Sad day for wildlife
It's a sad day when Redland City Council environment officers must present a list of sensitive wildlife reserves and beaches for councillors to relax dog restrictions.
If councillors choose to appease the likes of relentless petitioner L. Christophers then buy up vacant blocks with a tree or two for dog parks but do not render useless any more of our precious wildlife reserves.
Swamp Box Reserve adjoins designated Koala Area Ferntree Park, and is one of the few havens where the wallaby population can sleep by day without disturbance.
It makes no sense to allow dog walking through this quiet bushland just to "bring in it line with other areas" as explained by the local councillor. An influx of visiting dog walkers would have wallabies fleeing into dangerous territory and we would see many more killed on Redland Bay Road.
I urge those who care for all animals to help ensure this reserve, and others listed, remain wildlife reserves through consultation on council's your say webpage before closure date on December 6.

Holey Moley no
Residents were terribly disappointed to hear that Redland City Council had approved the Channel 7 production Holey Moley to be filmed in a residential area.
To have more than a week of loud cheering from the minute you went to bed until dawn was extremely wearing. You do not mind the odd night of disturbed sleep but to have it go on for over a week was so tiring.
We could hear the audience screaming and the production crew speaking on their megaphones from inside our bedroom.
This went on from early evening right through to 4am. How on earth are you expected to function at work when you have little sleep? The answer is, you do not. I had to apologise to my boss due to feeling totally exhausted and being half asleep on my feet.
We feel it was extremely inconsiderate that council approved this location as it affected residents, disturbed dogs and would have definitely impacted wildlife, that we are so desperately trying to protect.
Council needs to make sure it is moved to a more suitable location.

Holey Moley noisy
I agree with the Holey Moley Koala Worry article (RCB, Oct 14).
It is amazing that council deem filming of Holey Moley more important than habitat or fauna. They also deem it acceptable to allow filming from 4pm to 4am. What a joy.
The noise was unacceptable. I would happily have hosted councillors at my house to see how they coped with interrupted sleep and going to work the next day.
Thank you to local councillor Rowanne McKenzie for seconding the motion to support Holey Moley. You will not get my vote at the next election and others will agree.
I find it sad that residents' views are seen as an inconvenience by council. I hope council takes into consideration the multiple complaints they have received.
They also should consider what happens with this site in three years when the lease with Eureka products ends.

Influencing voters
Your front page (RCB, Oct 21) paper has the "story" of MP Andrew Laming and his so-called vision for the coastal walking link and this cannot be seen as anything other than free political advertising and an attempt by the paper to influence voters.
Mr Laming has a habit of butting into local and state elections and your paper has willingly fallen for his tricks.
We want an independent paper providing credible and balanced news and views. This is the same as done by the News Corp media outlets trying to influence election outcomes. It is a shame.

Thanks for the roads
Thanks to MP Andrew Laming and his staff for their fight for funding to seal island roads. The work on Sundown Road, Russell Island, was completed nine months ago.
Since the resurfacing, my breathing has improved immensely and my asthma has mostly disappeared.
I believe I can attribute a significant part of the improvement directly to this road sealing which prevents dust blowing around.

Seal Florence Street
Macleay Island's Florence Street needs sealing. Residents use this road as a short cut to the dump. The dust is horrible. It is choking. My husband has cancer, my son has asthma and I have asthma. I have lived on Macleay in this home for 18 years.

Stop Toondah
What should concern people most about the proposed Toondah Harbour development is the precedent it will set.
Canal estates are no longer allowed in any other Australian state or Territory. If we allow 50 hectares of the bay to be effectively gifted to a developer then what is to stop similar chunks being used.
Wellington Point is perfect for a marina project, Wynnum wading pool could be a marina with high rise and Redcliffe Esplanade is perfect for a marina and residential towers. The setting of a precedent makes it easy to do this again. We should stop it.

Gone forever
Redlanders who are unfamiliar with GJ Walter Park at Cleveland should visit and see what is to be lost if the Toondah Harbour development is approved. It is one of the most picturesque and natural parts of the foreshore, and a vital migratory shorebird habitat, and once gone, is gone forever.
