Freshwater anglers found the saratoga were responding to their presentations of topwater lures, stick baits and poppers and claimed their fair share of the togas.
As the days warm up, these fish will head into deeper water, so spinnerbaits, hard body lures and diving minnows will be more effective.
Lake Hinze fished particularly well as the water level rose and spilled. The bass moved amongst the trees. It is also important to be careful as the tree branches are waterlogged and rotten and a small bump can bring down substantial sized branches.
This week I went fishing for mackerel and whiting. The mackerel were being elusive and the tuna bursting on the surface were distracting us.
We spent a portion of our time chasing the tuna schools. There were some spectacular visuals of them in a feeding frenzy, although we did not manage to hook up.
The whiting fishing at Amity Banks was very successful, with my fishing buddy using squid and me using yabbies.
There were many diver and summer whiting and all were well over the minimum size limit.
I have encouraged anglers to join a fishing club to improve their skills. When it comes to a being a successful angler, I can't emphasise enough how much good fishing advice can be crucial to a good catch.
I received this fishing story from the Redlands RSL fishing club president Leon Joliffe about the time he took a friend out fishing who had not been out on the water for twenty years.
They were motoring down to the southern bay islands when Leon noticed some movement beneath the water's surface.
Dropping anchor, Leon sent down a soft plastic and his friend a baited line. On the second drop of the lure, a 58cm snapper was pulled from a feeding fish school.
They had stumbled upon a purple patch, and in less than an hour, they caught six quality fish, one of which was a 62cm barred grunter. His friend had never had such a fun day fishing.
If you would like to learn from experienced anglers, contact your local fishing club or call Leon on 0417 480 325.
