Ms Palaszczuk and Commissioner Carroll laid wreaths where the couple died, allegedly at the hands of a teenager in a stolen vehicle.
The site, at the corner of Finucane and Allenby roads, has become an unofficial memorial to the victims whose deaths have prompted widespread calls for a toughening of laws around young offenders.
Ms Leadbetter was pregnant, prompting many people to call for changes to the law that would allow charges to be laid over the loss of the unborn baby as well.
Capalaba MP Don Brown said the events of Australia Day had shocked the community to its core.
"To have Matt, Kate and their baby ripped away from family and loved ones is truly a tragedy. One in which it will be hard for our community to recover from," he said.
Mr Brown thanked the outpouring of support the community had shown towards the families and also for rescuing Frankie their beloved dog.
"I know our community is hurting, there is both sadness and anger over what has transpired. I am listening to the community and committed to stand alongside them to bring change and justice," he said.
Meanwhile Ms Leadbetter and Mr Fields' family have released an emotional statement thanking police, emergency services and the community for their support.
In a statement released by police this afternoon, the family said their shock and grief had been overwhelming and it was only now they were able to make a statement to acknowledge the outpouring of sympathy from the Redlands community.
