CAPALABA MP Don Brown has renewed calls for upgrades to arterial Rickertt Road after flooding saw the road closed during this week's heavy rain.
Mr Brown said Brisbane City Council should four lane the road before and after the Chelsea Road intersection.
Rickertt Road is a major commuter route for Redlanders travelling to and from Brisbane, carrying about 25,000 cars a day.
Brisbane City Council is set to start an upgrade to install traffic lights and pedestrian crossing signals and widen the road near Chelsea Road in April.
The upgrade also includes adding right turn lanes, and Brisbane City Council infrastructure chair David McLachlan said the works would improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists and reduce congestion.
But Mr Brown, who has long criticised the council for its handling of Rickertt Road, said the recent floods had highlighted the need for four laning remaining stretches of the road.
"It is ridiculous that BCC would spend all this money on upgrading (the) Chelsea Road intersection, just to leave the last 400 metres a goat track that is subjected to continual flooding and closure," Mr Brown said.

Cr McLachlan said the road had been closed once in the last year due to flooding, when flood levels reached 25 centimetres on Monday.
The road was reopened after several hours.
Mr Brown said works to widen the rest of Rickertt Road would allow drainage issues to be addressed.
"Residents are constantly trying to check whether the road is open or not, which is causing great anxiety and anger," he said.
Cr McLachlan said widening Rickertt Road to four lanes was part of Brisbane City Council's infrastructure plan for the next five years, and would be prioritised against other projects in the city.
The intersection upgrade is set to be finished by late 2021.
It comes as residents air their grievances on Redlands roads in an RACQ congestion survey.
Five residents identified Rickertt Road as needing attention, with two complaints including that it was flood-prone and narrow.
Other complaints were about the Chelsea Road intersection.
