Spring has sprung and orchids are blossoming in the Redlands as the weather heats up.
The Redlands Orchid Society will host its 50th annual Spring Show at the Redlands Multi Sports Club on October 2 to raise funds for the hospital auxiliary.
Society committee member Tom Edmonds said there would be a display of orchids grown by locals, and the opportunity to have them judged by qualified Australian Orchid Council judges.
He said there would be plants on sale, where attendees could snap up beautiful orchids for cheap prices.
"You won't see a display of orchids anywhere like this in the Redlands, and we're supporting the Redland Hospital,"
"Orchids are traditionally very silly prices, but we have them at reasonable prices so you can come and pick up a bargain," Mr Edmonds said.
"At the autumn show this year we sold $28,000 worth of plants with the average plant sold for $15, and a percentage of the takings were donated to the Redland Hospital Auxiliary."
The hospital will have a craft stall, and another stand will sell pots and repotting mixtures needed to start growing your own orchids or to add to your collection.
Mr Edmonds said this year organisers would reintroduce potting demonstrations, and people who attended could get advice or even pick up a new hobby.
"It is a really inspiring hobby, once you get one you'll want to collect more, they're so interesting," Mr Edmonds said.
"If you get a chance, come down on Saturday afternoon, you'll be gobsmacked."
The show will run from 8.30am to 3pm. Entry is $3 for adults and free for children.
The Redland Orchid Society is always welcoming new members, and holds a meeting at the club on the third Tuesday of each month.
To mark its 50th anniversary society members will attend a luncheon to celebrate in September.
