BirdLife Australia is calling on the next generation of bird lovers and their parents to get involved in this year's Aussie Backyard Bird Count.
The annual count runs from October 18 to 24.
The Aussie Backyard Bird Count aims to engage school communities while getting to know the birds in their local area, through participation in a simple, fun, activity that can be done anywhere.
BirdLife Australia's chief bird nerd, Sean Dooley said this year's count would provide an opportunity to gain a more detailed picture of native birds.
"We have sent out educational packs to schools to allow students to learn about birds in their virtual learning and be part of this exciting citizen science event that gathers valuable information about our native birds," he said.
Using the specially designed app, which helps people identify local birds based on size, colour and location, the aim is to count birds during the 20 minute survey.
Last year, more than 1600 Aussie schools took part in the bird count, and BirdLife Australia would like to see that number even higher this year.
"In 2020, there was an increase in the number of participants under 15 years of age taking part in the count.
"Over the past two years we have also seen less than 7 per cent of counters in the under 15 age group, so it would be great to have more of our younger Australians involved," Mr Dooley said.
There is more than $5000 worth of prizes being given away as part of this year's count.
