THORNLANDS dog owners are signing up to get more freedom for their four-legged friends.
A petition calling for a dog park in Kinross Road estate is fast gaining signatures after a resident initiated it last week.
Gillian Kohl said she wanted to give her one-year-old dog Bailey the opportunity to socialise with other dogs but there was nowhere nearby to do so.
"Kinross Road estate is growing and the properties are not very big, with small yards not big enough for dogs to let loose.
"Bailey's personality is bigger than his yard," she said.
Ms Kohl works most days and gets home late. She said a park nearby to let Bailey run free would be a huge benefit.
"The nearest dog park is in Panorama Drive, a far distance away to walk with your dog... it's not convenient and it gets really busy," she said.
She hoped a space, away from park play areas and convenient for residents living in all the estates in Kinross Road, would be allocated.
"As for the wildlife... there may be a risk but measures can be taken to make it safe for dogs and wildlife," Ms Kohl said.
Councillor Rowanne McKenzie said if the majority of residents were in favour of a dog park and a suitable location could be allocated, she would advocate on their behalf.
"The closest off leash dog area to the Kinross Estate is at Robert Mackie Park, which is not easily accessible from Kinross, so it's understandable that some residents are campaigning for one in the estate," she said.
