Police investigations suggest a Mitsubishi Lancer was travelling south on West Mount Cotton Road when it veered off the road and hit a power pole.
The driver, an 18-year-old Thornlands man, died at the scene.
The accident is among a string of road incidents this morning and overnight as the first decent rain in months is recorded.
One of the minor accidents included a car sliding off Vienna Road at Alexandra Hills and through a property's front fence.
There were also accidents at Logan Village, Slack's Creek, Lower Beechmont, Burbank, Browns Plains, Hillcrest, Canungra and Cornubia.
Wet roads are always slippery but rain after a dry patch is considered extremely dangerous.
It occurs because oils and other pollutants from cars build up over the dry period with no opportunity for the material to be washed off the pavement.
A police forensic crash unit is investigating the Sheldon crash which closed two lanes on Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road West early this morning.
