A Redland Bay SES veteran has won an award for his hard work and service to the Bayside community for more than 18 years.
Alex Johnson said he first volunteered for the SES after his job in NSW became redundant.
"I wanted to work on myself so I thought I'd join a community group just to stay in contact with people and help the community, so I joined the SES," he said.
Mr Johnson moved to the Redlands in 2003 where he continued to volunteer with the orange army.
When he is not volunteering, Mr Johnson works as a compliance officer for the Brisbane City Council but said his SES work was his most rewarding role.
"I like helping the community, there's a great group of people at the Redlands unit and it's very satisfying to be able to help people when they're in a time of need," he said.
During SES week Mr Johnson has been recognised for his commitment and service to the Redlands community as the regional member of the year across Brisbane, the Redlands and Moreton Bay.
"I was very humbled and surprised to win the award, I don't think I do anything different to any other volunteers, I just do what I do," Mr Johnson said.
"It really is a team effort, there are so many people at the Redlands Unit that also put in a lot of time and effort as well."
He said he hoped to have at least another 10 years volunteering with the SES, and looked forward to watching the unit grow in the Redlands as more trainees sign up.
The Redland SES Unit also was also recognised, highly commended in the regional operational response of the year category.
