THE Sycamore School will open up to students with autism in years 7 and 8 next year.
It comes after the school received approval from the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board to expand into high school education, for years 7 to 10.
The school opened last year to students with autism spectrum disorder from prep to year 6.
In January, it will offer year 7 and 8. The school will introduce year 9 in 2020 and year 10 the following year.
Sycamore School is based on the Alexandra Hills TAFE campus, providing a full-time autism friendly program aligned to the Australian Curriculum.
Founder and chief executive officer Cindy Corrie said she was excited that the school would be able to provide a pathway that would support students and improve their opportunities later in life.
“The high school will provide an opportunity for students to engage with a program that supports academic development and addresses the lifelong hurdles that people with autism face,” Ms Corrie said.
Principal Ronwyn Collier said it was wonderful news for many parents and young people in the community.
“This process has taken many months of hard work by several of our staff and we are very thankful for this positive outcome,” Ms Collier said.
“We are all looking forward to another new chapter in The Sycamore story.”
