A BUILDING at the Alexandra Hills TAFE campus is being upgraded for Queensland’s first full-time high school for young people with autism.
The Sycamore School was given approval last year to cater for students up to year 10.
Training Minister Shannon Fentiman said the secondary students were using a temporary building until the refurbishment was completed.
“The new state of the art facilities are on their way to being completed for students by term two,” Ms Fentiman said.
“The building is being upgraded to meet requirements for teaching students with special needs.
“The refurbishment will include internal refit, floor covering, internal partitioning, painting and disability access ramps and verandahs.”
Capalaba MP Don Brown said the Sycamore School had been on the TAFE campus for two years.
It catered for more than 60 prep to year 6 students with autism spectrum disorder.
“The expansion (to include a second block) will allow for 40 extra students in years 7 and 8 to join the school this year,” Mr Brown said.
Ms Fentiman said the Palaszczuk government would invest more than $10 million in the Alexandra Hills TAFE to provide the local Redlands community the facilities to complete their full apprenticeship.
The campus offers courses in aged care, automotive, business, child care, community services, construction, electrotechnology, fitness, general education, nursing, plumbing, and tourism and events.
