LOCAL police are shining a spotlight on road safety these Easter school holidays, inviting the public to join them for a cuppa during the Queensland Police Easter Road Safety campaign.
Three Coffee with a Cop events will be held this week, coinciding with the first week of the campaign and the school holidays.
The campaign, which launched on Friday, includes high visibility policing on roads and random drug and alcohol testing during the holiday period, which sees an increase in vehicles using Queensland roads.
It will run until April 26.
The Easter Road Safety campaign targets the Fatal Five behaviours contributing to road accidents, which are speeding, drinking and drug use, fatigue, seat belt use and driver distraction and inattention.
Commissioner Ian Stewart said research had shown that a high police presence on major road networks during peak holiday periods provided community reassurance and also deterred those engaging in high-risk behaviour.
"Officers will be out in force conducting roadside testing for drugs and alcohol, as well as covert and overt speed enforcement in high-risk zones," Commissioner Stewart said.
Two Coffee with a Cop events in Cleveland on Sunday, April 14 will also coincide with the Redlands Coast Amazing Race.
The race will see teams embarking on a giant treasure hunt around the Redlands.
